Chances are.. You used a search engine to reach this page.  Most people do.  Personally, my homepage is set to "blank" and if I open my browser, it's to find something FAST, AND, I use a search engine to get that info.  So, we know that search engine placement is VITAL to getting visitors to your website.  This article will touch on the fast way to be listed (read *PAY*) and the slower way (read *FREE*).

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to pay to have your site listed in the major search engines!  Your site can be listed in the top 3 on the major search sites, if you're willing to spend the time and effort it takes!

Please READ THIS:

Submitting your site the free way does not guarantee placement in the search engine!  I repeat.. Submitting your site the free way does not guarantee placement in the search engine!
Paying for placement doesn't guarantee you'll receive the type of visitors you desire, or even receive visitors at all!

TONS of Relevant content, hard work, diligence, and word of mouth is the best way to get visitors and return visitors!!!

A long time ago someone coined the phrase "Content is King" and it still applies.  The more content you have on your site, the better your site is.  Plain and simple.  Your website will only be as good as YOU make it!

** Now...

In this article, I'll try to cover the following points:

  • Search Engines.

  • The proper use of Meta Tags

  • Free Hosting Sites (geocities, tripod, angelfire etal) the good and the bad

  • Guest books, Free For All Pages (FFA), Reciprocal Links, "Add a Link" sites, webrings, etc.

Search Engines:

A few of the more popular search sites include; Yahoo, Google, Alta Vista, Dogpile, and the Open Directory Project.  There are MANY MANY other search sites on the www, (don't send me a list!!!) I'm just going to touch on a few of the more popular search sites.

Here's how to get listed quickly:

Yahoo - You can pay to be listed within 7 days for only $299, and $299 per year after that, however, if you run a free site, this is probably not the solution you seek AND, there is no guarantee that you will be listed or listed in the category you wish to have your site listed in!!  See Section 2.5 of Yahoo's TOS.

Google - Google offers a solution to have you listed on a pay-per-click pricing scheme with the "Ad Words" program.

Alta Vista - With Altavista's Express Inclusion program, You are allowed submission of 500 URLS and daily indexing of your site for $19.00 every 6 months.

Dogpile - With Dogpile's guaranteed search inclusion program, you may submit up to 500 URLS for a mere *cough* $599.93 yearly!  Dogpile search results are a compilation of the top 5-10 results from several popular search engines.

Here's how to get listed for free:

If you don't have the funds to pay for the "fast route", here's the scoop on the free way!!  It takes a bit longer for results to appear, but well worth the wait!

Yahoo - Did you know that Yahoo displays the Yahoo Directory (paid), first, then displays the "web matches" if there is no match?  Handy information to keep in mind, because the results of the "web matches" come from google.  Why not just submit your site to google and take your chances?  Chances are good that you'll be listed "on yahoo!" :)

Google - Since Yahoo uses Google, you should definitely have your site indexed!  It takes a couple of weeks for results, however, if you're willing to wait for Google to index your site, you can be added for free!  Here's the link!

Alta Vista - You can add 5 URLS for free to Alta Vista's basic search for free!  Here's the link!

Dogpile - While it's nice to be listed in the Dogpile Picks section, why not submit your site(s) to the individual engines?

Open Directory - There is no real "fast route" to being listed with the Open Directory Project, as it is a human-edited directory.  Simply visit dmoz.org and click the link ADD URL at the top of the page.  You'll have to spend a little time finding the relevant directory for your listing, and it DOES take time to be listed!!!  However, there are numerous sites using the ODP results, and you will receive A LOT of exposure!

Fine Tune your web pages (All of them!) for higher rankings in the search engines!!

We've received tons of request for a search engine submittal engine, we added one!  Please click here to visit our search engine submittal page.

Would you like to be listed on groovynet.com?  Please click here and add a link to your NON ADULT website.

Good luck and God bless!
